mutawintji house |

"Architects have regarded building in the Australian context to be part of a transient existence. The seminal types have been the humpy and the corrugated iron shearing shed: both suggest a tenative commitment to the land so long as conditions remain viable. It is more than a coincidence that the Mutawintji Land Council's first act since the handback of their land in September last year ,was to build an expression of permanence in the form of a massively built house. These people are not moving on and they have expressed this in this building that has been drawn out of the very earth and rock that they now rightly possess." Paul Connor |
