Manipulating the site.

Located on a steep escarpment, overlooking a magnificent coastline, both the architects and their clients were keen to maximise the views to the sea and headlands. Designed by Connor + Solomon Architects, this large new house on the water’s edge seems to continue indefinitely. While the house appears to have been commissioned for a large family, it was actually designed for a couple, whose children and grad-children come to stay on a regular basis.

This large rendered home occupies most of the 400-square metre site. The shape of the site also made the architect’s task more difficult. “Our clients wanted views from all the spaces, it’s quite an unusual site. The shape is similar to two flags, which have been joined together( the site is only 6 metres in width at the center),” says architect Paul Connor. To obtain as many sea views as possible, Connor + Solomon designed a courtyard pool in the center of the site, with the main bedroom and en-suite facilities on the first floor, taking in the panoramic views. However, even from the stairs, nooks and landings within the house, the architects ensured water views, “There are also glimpses of the beach from most windows. We made sure there was an outlook from the study too, where the owner spends a reasonable amount of time, “ says Connor. “We wanted to create a series of spaces that differ at various times of the day,” he says.

The house was inspired by the many of the architects had seen on their travels, in particular the Moorish architecture of Spain. “I showed my clients this book I had on the Balearic Islands. They had an instant affinity with the images,” says Connor. “The old house (which was pulled down) had a turret.” There are also a series of turreted houses close by.

To play homage to the past and to the house’s context, this home incorporates a tower as well. “We like to reflect on the past, but it’s also important to create a contemporary statement with a new design.” Says Connor.

While the view from the tower is spectacular, the views from the large terraces leading from the house are equally impressive.
