This renovation of an 1860's cotttage in the Sydney suburb of Balmain was an agreeable challenge for architect Paul Connor and his wife Jeanne. The renovation also needed to accommodate an office/studio space. Access between the office and home is separated by a door that incorprates a bookcase, the books on the home side doubling as sound deadening and the office side serving as a display board hides it's real purpose. The upper level of the house, overlooking the dining and kitchen area, is the main bedroom. This peaceful area is cooled by a bank of cedar louvres which catch the afternoon sea breezes in the summer. A subtle mix of timbers adds to the visual warmth of the area. The open kitchen make good use of light and the open nature of the ajacent living area gives the feeling of space.
